In a rapid response to a disturbing incident, Kano’s Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology has suspended a lecturer accused of subjecting students to corporal punishment during a ‘Nigerian People and Culture’ lesson. The incident gained attention after a video went viral on social media, prompting widespread condemnation and swift intervention from the university’s management.
The lecturer’s alleged use of corporal punishment for minor infractions has been labeled as barbaric by Kano-based lawyer Barr. Abba Hikima, leading to public outrage. The university, owned by the Kano State Government and named after the renowned businessman Aliko Dangote, promptly addressed the issue following the lawyer’s open letter.

Deputy Registrar Sa’idu Abdullahi Nayaya released a press statement acknowledging the viral video and assuring the public of the university’s commitment to student welfare and safety. Nayaya revealed that the management swiftly issued a query to the lecturer, suspended the staff member, and forwarded the case to the Disciplinary Committee for further investigation.
“The measures were taken swiftly to arrest the situation and bring justice. The management is hereby assuring parents and the general public that any breach of student welfare and safety will not be tolerated and will be met with appropriate consequences,” emphasized Nayaya.
