Vietnamese Business Tycoon Faces Death Sentence in $27 Billion Fraud Case

In one of Vietnam’s most significant corruption trials to date, Truong My Lan, the chair of major developer Van Thinh Phat, along with 85 other individuals, awaits verdicts and potential sentencing for their alleged involvement in a massive fraud case. The trial, which has captivated the nation’s attention, unfolded in the historic colonial-era courthouse in Ho Chi Minh City over the course of five intense weeks.

Lan stands accused of orchestrating a scheme to siphon billions of dollars from Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB) over a span of ten years. The allegations against her range from embezzlement and bribery to abuse of power and violations of banking laws. Prosecutors claim that Lan’s actions have resulted in damages amounting to a staggering $27 billion, which is equivalent to six percent of Vietnam’s GDP in 2023.

The courtroom was a scene of heightened tension as more than a dozen police vehicles transported the defendants to the courthouse, where they joined former central bankers, ex-government officials, and previous SCB executives in facing the charges against them. Throughout the trial, the accused listened as the prosecution presented evidence of their alleged wrongdoing.

This high-profile trial comes shortly after another prominent figure in Vietnam’s business world, Do Anh Dung, head of the Tan Hoang Minh group, received an eight-year prison sentence for his involvement in a separate $355 million bond scam. Dung’s case underscores the government’s commitment to cracking down on corruption and financial crimes, sending a strong message to those who seek to exploit the country’s economy for personal gain.
