Western Union Foundation Global Scholarships: Empowering International Students

The Western Union Foundation has been transforming lives since 2016 through its Global Scholarships initiative, granting over 600 scholarships to international students who cross borders in pursuit of education and opportunity. These scholarships, supported by Western Union employees, partners, and agents, provide much-needed financial assistance to high-potential students facing significant challenges in achieving their academic dreams.

International students often encounter difficulties such as high tuition costs, cultural adjustments, and limited work opportunities. The Foundation’s Global Scholars Program, in collaboration with the Institute of International Education, addresses these barriers by supporting students from low-income communities in some of the world’s leading academic destinations, including the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, Japan, and the United Kingdom. This year, the program awarded 42 scholarships, two of which were made possible by the generous contributions of Western Union employees.

Another impactful initiative is the Foundation’s Immigrant Scholarship Program, conducted in partnership with Metropolitan State University of Denver. This program supports immigrant students in Denver by providing financial aid and additional resources through the university’s Immigrant Services Program. These services focus on helping students adapt to their new environment, ensuring better retention, enrollment, and graduation rates.

A shining example of the program’s success is Sasha, a scholarship recipient from Ukraine studying at Allegheny College. Despite the ongoing war in her home country, Sasha has maintained a strong GPA and developed a gamified therapy app to help displaced Ukrainian refugees. She credits the Western Union Foundation’s scholarship with giving her the financial stability to focus on her education and innovative project.

The Western Union Foundation’s broader mission, Prosperity Beyond Borders, aims to drive $500 million in aggregate wage gains for individuals who face barriers to economic mobility.
