Why I Didn’t Sack ex-CBN Gov Emefiele, Buhari Explains Decision

Former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, has shed light on his decision not to remove Godwin Emefiele from his position as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, despite widespread speculations about Emefiele’s alleged presidential ambitions during the 2023 elections.

In his recently unveiled memoir, ‘Working with Buhari: Reflections of a Special Adviser, Media and Publicity (2015 – 2023),’ written by Femi Adesina, Buhari clarified that he refrained from taking action against Emefiele due to the absence of concrete evidence supporting the claims of his presidential aspirations.

Buhari stated, “When he (Emefiele) was linked with the campaign for the 2023 presidency, I did not ask him because he told nobody he was getting involved. Otherwise, I would have removed him and told the nation why.” He emphasized the importance of fairness, insisting that acting on hearsay without firm evidence would be unjust.

The former president expressed his awareness of the potential long-term consequences of unjust actions, stating, “If you punish a man unjustly, it could dog his footsteps throughout life.” Buhari highlighted his commitment to fairness, considering the impact such decisions could have on the morale of those serving under his leadership.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, Emefiele, who has been linked to a potential presidential bid, recently sought divine guidance on whether to contest for the All Progressives Congress presidential ticket. This comes after a group of supporters obtained the N100 million nomination and expression of interest forms on his behalf.

During the book unveiling ceremony, President Bola Tinubu commended Buhari for maintaining a hands-off approach after leaving office in 2023, emphasizing the former president’s commitment to non-interference and support for his successor’s administration.
