World Bank Allocates N3.5 Billion to Renovate 105 Primary Schools in Oyo State

The World Bank has extended a generous grant of N3.5 billion to Oyo State for the renovation of 105 selected public primary schools. This initiative, part of the Better Education Service Delivery for All – Additional Funding (BESDA-AF) project, aims to improve the learning environment and increase access to quality education, especially in rural areas.

The announcement was made by Governor Seyi Makinde during a symbolic presentation of cheques to representatives from the beneficiary schools. Representing the Governor, Deputy Governor Mr. Bayo Lawal emphasized the critical need for these renovations to ensure the facilities meet the prescribed standards.

The renovation project will be implemented across the three senatorial districts of Oyo State. The scope of work includes the construction of modern toilets, drilling and installation of boreholes, and other essential improvements to create a conducive learning environment for pupils. Governor Makinde stressed the importance of adhering to high-quality standards to maximize the benefits of the project and enhance public appreciation of the government’s efforts in the education sector. He called on those overseeing the renovations to avoid substandard work, highlighting the substantial investment and the need for meticulous execution.

According to Mr. Suraj Tiamiyu, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education Intervention, the renovations are expected to be completed within six weeks. Tiamiyu assured that the project would be closely monitored to ensure timely and effective delivery, adhering to the set standards.

The BESDA-AF project, backed by the World Bank and the Global Partnership for Education, seeks to increase equitable access to education for out-of-school children, improve literacy rates in beneficiary states, and strengthen accountability in basic education. Oyo State, along with Adamawa and Katsina, has been selected to benefit from this educational grant. The initiative underscores the World Bank’s commitment to fostering educational development and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn in a supportive and well-equipped environment.
