X Tests $1 Annual Subscription for New and Unverified Users

In a recent announcement, X, previously known as Twitter, revealed a novel approach to curbing spam and maintaining a higher level of authenticity on its platform. The social media giant is currently testing a program called “Not A Bot,” which requires new and unverified users to pay a $1 annual subscription fee to sign up. This experimental initiative is currently being rolled out in New Zealand and the Philippines, allowing new accounts to post and interact with other users.

The decision to implement this annual subscription fee is driven by X’s dedication to creating a spam-free and genuine user experience. It’s important to note that existing users will remain unaffected by this trial. The $1 annual fee is intended to strike a balance between ensuring accessibility to the platform while implementing robust anti-spam measures.

X provided the following statement regarding the “Not A Bot” program: “Starting today, we’re testing a new program (Not A Bot) in New Zealand and the Philippines. New, unverified accounts will be required to sign up for a $1 annual subscription to be able to post and interact with other posts. Within this test, existing users are not affected. This new test was developed to bolster our already successful efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform, and bot activity while balancing platform accessibility with the small fee amount. It is not a profit driver. And so far, subscription options have proven to be the main solution that works at scale.”

This step underlines X’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the quality and trustworthiness of interactions on its platform, all while ensuring a fair and inclusive space for its users.

The introduction of the subscription program represents a proactive and innovative approach to tackling issues such as spam, automated accounts, and the dissemination of false information. During its trial phase in New Zealand and the Philippines, X intends to evaluate the program’s effectiveness in reducing unwanted activities on its platform.

The success of this experimental program could have a considerable impact on how social media platforms address spam and inauthentic accounts moving forward.
