In a significant change to the Super Eagles’ roster, Alhassan Yusuf is set to step into the shoes of the injured Wilfred Ndidi as Nigeria readies itself for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Team spokesman Babafemi Raji disclosed this development during a press briefing on Wednesday, revealing that Ndidi’s absence from Leicester City’s recent victory over Huddersfield Town was due to an unspecified injury. The 23-year-old Yusuf, though yet to earn a cap for Nigeria, has caught the attention of selectors with his stellar performances for Belgian champions Royal Antwerp.
The Super Eagles, a three-time African champion, are currently in the United Arab Emirates for their pre-tournament training ahead of AFCON, hosted by Ivory Coast and set to commence on January 13 in Abidjan.

In the wake of Ndidi’s injury, there is also uncertainty surrounding the fitness of Kelechi Iheanacho, Ndidi’s Leicester City teammate, who is nursing a muscle injury. The team hopes for Iheanacho’s swift recovery as they aim for success in AFCON.
Nigeria’s football enthusiasts are closely monitoring the developments, eager to witness how Yusuf’s inclusion will impact the Super Eagles’ performance in this highly anticipated continental competition.
