In an unprecedented turn of events, Zamfara State has emerged as the top-performing northern state in the National Examination Council (NECO) entrance exams for gifted students. This remarkable achievement marks a significant departure from Zamfara’s traditional position at the lower end of the performance hierarchy, signaling a new era of educational excellence for the state.
Last week, the National Examination Council (NECO) announced the 2024 results for admission into the Federal Government Gifted Academy, Suleja. In an official statement released on Sunday, the spokesperson for the Zamfara Governor, Sulaiman Bala Idris, revealed that Zamfara State secured the highest number of slots among the northern states. With 30 talented students qualifying, Zamfara ranked second nationwide, just behind Anambra State, which topped the list with 35 students.

“This achievement by Zamfara State students in the NECO entrance exams for gifted students is a historic breakthrough. For the first time, Zamfara is excelling on the national stage, moving away from its usual lower ranking,” Idris stated.
The NECO ‘Gifted Examination’ is a prestigious test conducted for final-year primary school pupils under 11 years old. It serves as the gateway for admission into the Federal Government Academy, Suleja—a training ground for Nigeria’s gifted and talented children. This academy offers exceptional students the opportunity to develop their potential through federal government scholarships, which cover tuition, external examination fees, boarding, feeding, uniforms, and introductory textbooks.

In 2024, Zamfara initially received three slots based on the state quota but secured an additional 27 slots based on national merit. This feat underscores the exceptional performance of Zamfara students, who outperformed their peers from other northern states.
The 30 qualified students from Zamfara include 21 girls and 9 boys, highlighting a growing emphasis on girl-child education within the state. This gender distribution reflects the state’s commitment to fostering educational opportunities for all children, regardless of gender.
“This significant development is particularly noteworthy given that a state of emergency was declared in Zamfara’s education sector last year. The government’s concerted efforts are now bearing fruit,” Idris emphasized.
The Zamfara State government has pledged to continue implementing robust educational policies aimed at sustaining and enhancing these achievements. This commitment includes ensuring that more students from Zamfara gain access to quality education and opportunities for academic excellence.
“This landmark success is just the beginning. The state government will intensify its efforts to fully implement educational policies that will lead to even greater successes in the future,” Idris concluded.
Zamfara’s emergence as a top-performing state in the NECO exams represents a beacon of hope and progress in Nigeria’s educational landscape. This achievement not only boosts the state’s reputation but also serves as an inspiration for other regions striving for educational improvement.
