Swiss President Viola Amherd underscored the summit’s goal to inspire a process towards a sustainable peace and prepare the ground for future direct talks between Ukraine and Russia. Amherd mentioned the potential for future summits to eventually involve Russia.
In stark contrast, Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a speech on Friday, criticized the conference and insisted that Kyiv must effectively surrender before any peace negotiations could occur. This stance was swiftly rejected by NATO and the United States.
The summit, convening leaders from 100 countries and global institutions, takes place at a critical juncture for Ukraine, now over two years into the conflict initiated by Russia in February 2022. Attendees include leaders from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the European Union, among others. However, Russia’s BRICS allies Brazil and South Africa have sent only envoys, and India is represented at the ministerial level. China has opted not to participate, citing Moscow’s absence as a reason.
Samuel Charap, a Russia expert at the RAND Corporation, noted Russia’s evident displeasure with the summit, highlighting concerns over the potential expansion of the pro-Ukraine coalition.
On the front lines, optimism remains low. Ukrainian forces face significant challenges, with recent setbacks in the eastern region. A tank commander in Donetsk expressed skepticism about the summit’s impact, while a Kyiv resident, weary of the prolonged conflict, echoed similar sentiments but hoped for an end to the war.
