Zulum Converts Arabic School in Borno State into Institute to Combat Boko Haram Ideology

In a strategic move to combat the extremist ideology of Boko Haram, Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has announced the transformation of the Mustapha Umar Elkanemi Arabic (Teachers) College in Maiduguri into a specialized institute for the teaching of Arabic and Islamic education. This initiative aims to counter the radical ideologies propagated by Boko Haram, the militant group infamous for its violent opposition to education and its distorted interpretation of Islam.

Governor Zulum made this significant announcement during an inspection visit to the college, which is currently undergoing preparations for its transformation. The future institute will operate in collaboration with the prestigious Al-Azhar University in Cairo, renowned for its expertise in Islamic studies.

The primary goal of the newly established institute is to produce graduates well-versed in Arabic and Islamic knowledge who will play a crucial role in spreading messages of peace and countering the extremist ideas promoted by Boko Haram. Governor Zulum expressed his vision for the institute, saying, “We hope to ensure that each student, upon graduating from this school, can speak Arabic fluently and possess a strong foundation in Islamic studies. Admission will be open to students from all 27 local government areas, enabling them to return to their communities as ambassadors of peace.”

This transformative initiative is driven by the desire to prevent a recurrence of the traumatic experiences endured by Borno State over the past decade due to Boko Haram’s activities. By equipping young individuals with the knowledge and skills to counter extremist ideologies, the government of Borno State seeks to create a more stable and peaceful future for the region.
