In its latest Food Security report, the World Bank has raised alarming concerns about the imminent food crisis in seven states across Northern Nigeria, highlighting the impact of insecurity and armed conflicts on the region’s standards of living. The identified states include Borno, Adamawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Yobe, Sokoto, and Zamfara.
The report projects that the mentioned states in the far north of Nigeria will be at Crisis food security levels (IPC Phase 3) due to persistent insecurity, armed conflict, and deteriorating livelihoods. Specific areas within Northeastern states, such as Abadam, Bama, Guzamala, Marte, are expected to experience Emergency food security levels (IPC Phase 4) due to limited household food stock and restricted access to markets and humanitarian aid.
Beyond Nigeria, the report foresees varying degrees of food insecurity in West African countries like Burkina Faso, Chad, and Niger, emphasizing the broader regional implications of the crisis.
The report also highlights global inflation trends, revealing that over 63.2% of low-income countries experienced inflation levels surpassing 5%, with a notable increase compared to the previous update. The report delves into inflation rates in lower-middle-income and upper-middle-income countries as well.
The report sheds light on the grim situation in Nigeria, where the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicates food inflation at over 33%. This aligns with warnings from the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) and the United Nations (UN) about the risk of hunger for millions of Nigerians.
Despite President Tinubu declaring an emergency on food insecurity in July and elevating the matter to the National Security Council, the report suggests limited impact on the surging food prices, as evidenced by recent protests in Niger state over rising food costs and hunger.
