The Columbia Global Emerging Scholars Fellowship Program 2025 is now accepting applications. This prestigious year-long fellowship, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is designed to help displaced scholars in the humanities and humanistic social sciences rebuild their academic careers. The program provides financial support, academic mentorship, and research resources at one of three Columbia Global Centers:
- Amman (Middle East and North Africa)
- Nairobi (Sub-Saharan Africa)
- Santiago (Latin America and the Caribbean)
Fellows will receive an annual stipend of $28,000 for Amman and Santiago and $23,000 for Nairobi. Additional benefits include a $5,000 family stipend for scholars with children, round-trip airfare, office space, internet access, and access to Columbia University’s online library. Each fellow will be paired with a Columbia University faculty mentor, gain networking opportunities, and have the chance to present their research at a public forum.
Eligible applicants must be displaced scholars with a Ph.D. in the humanities or related fields such as anthropology, sociology, gender studies, or ethnic studies. Candidates who were on track to complete a Ph.D. before displacement may also apply. Applicants must have received their highest academic degree within the last 12 years, reside in the region where they are applying, and demonstrate at least intermediate English proficiency. Fellows are expected to stay in-person at their host Columbia Global Center for the duration of the fellowship, with a minimum requirement of six months if full relocation is not possible.
