In a significant stride towards enhancing efficiency and accessibility, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, is set to inaugurate the country’s first-ever online portal for passport applications on January 8, 2024, in Abuja. The move comes as part of the Federal Government’s commitment to streamline and automate the passport application process.
During a recent demonstration session, Minister Tunji-Ojo, alongside the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Caroline Adepoju, showcased the newly developed online platform, designed to cater to both international and Nigerian passport applicants.
This development aligns with the minister’s earlier announcement in December, where he highlighted the government’s efforts to implement a fully automated passport application system. The minister stated that the system is now “99 per cent done,” emphasizing a user-friendly process that includes uploading passport photos and supporting documents.
For Nigerian applicants, two passport options are available – the 32-page passport with a five-year validity, priced at N25,000, and the 64-page passport with a ten-year validity, available at N70,000. Foreign applicants can opt for a 32-page passport with a five-year validity, priced at $130, or a 64-page passport with a ten-year validity, available at $230. Applications can be submitted through the official portal: https://passport.immigration.gov.ng.
The implementation of this online passport application portal is a significant step towards modernizing and simplifying the passport acquisition process, ensuring a more efficient and user-friendly experience for both Nigerian and international applicants. This move is expected to ease the burden on applicants while enhancing the overall effectiveness of the passport issuance system.
