ATBUTH Bauchi Reduces Kidney Dialysis Cost by 70% to Help Patients

In a major healthcare breakthrough, the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi has reduced the cost of kidney dialysis by 70%, bringing the price per session down from ₦40,000 to ₦12,000. This move is aimed at making life-saving treatment more accessible for patients struggling with kidney disease.

The initiative is part of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on improving healthcare affordability for Nigerians. The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has supported this effort by providing large quantities of dialysis consumables and an additional dialysis machine to boost the hospital’s capacity.

Since the price cut, over 45 patients have already benefited from the subsidized treatment. Many have expressed relief at finally being able to afford regular dialysis sessions, which are essential for managing kidney failure.

The Chief Medical Director of ATBUTH, Professor Yusuf Bara Jibrin, emphasized that this reduction is meant to ease the financial burden on patients and ensure that cost is not a barrier to receiving critical medical care. He reassured the public that the hospital will continue to collaborate with the government and stakeholders to sustain and expand this initiative.

Kidney disease remains a growing concern in Nigeria, with thousands of patients in need of dialysis. The high cost of treatment has long been a challenge, forcing many to forgo care. With this price reduction, ATBUTH is setting an example of how healthcare institutions can work to make essential treatments more affordable.

This development marks a significant step in improving healthcare access in Bauchi and beyond. The hospital’s decision to lower dialysis costs offers new hope for patients and highlights the importance of policies that prioritize affordable and quality medical services. Many are now calling for other hospitals across the country to adopt similar measures to ensure that financial limitations do not prevent people from receiving the treatment they need.
