Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has strongly condemned the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu, accusing it of imposing an unprecedented level of oppressive control. Atiku’s remarks came in response to the recent arrest of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, by the Department of State Services (DSS), and the raid on the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) office in Abuja.
In a post on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday, Atiku alleged that Tinubu’s government is surpassing even the most oppressive days of Nigeria’s military dictatorship. He urged the administration and security agencies to refocus their efforts on tackling violence and insecurity, rather than targeting those advocating for the rights of workers and civil society organizations.

Ajaero was detained by the DSS at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Monday while en route to the UK for official duties. He was held for several hours before his release late Monday night, fueling concerns about the government’s approach to dissent and organized labor.
Atiku’s comments reflect growing concerns about the administration’s handling of civil liberties, especially in light of recent actions aimed at intimidating organized labor and civil society.
This incident is seen as part of a broader trend of suppressing dissent, with many calling for a shift in focus to address the root causes of violence and insecurity in the country.
