In a significant move aimed at improving the daily lives of civil servants and the general public, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has unveiled a new fleet of 70 buses designed for metro transport. The unveiling ceremony, held at the Borno Express terminus in Maiduguri, signifies the state government’s commitment to enhancing transportation services and easing the daily commute for its residents.
The spokesperson for the governor, Mallam Isa Gusau, explained that this initiative is primarily intended to alleviate the challenges associated with daily commuting, especially in light of the removal of fuel subsidies. The newly launched fleet comprises a combination of standard-sized and larger buses, all equipped with modern amenities, including air conditioning and comfortable seating arrangements, ensuring a pleasant and efficient commute for passengers.
Governor Zulum emphasized that this effort represents the second phase of the government’s response to the removal of fuel subsidies. Out of the 70 newly acquired buses, 30 will be dedicated to transporting civil servants to their workplaces between 7:00 am and 9:00 am, with a return service between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm on weekdays.
“I want you to ensure that these buses start operations tomorrow morning (Tuesday) without fail. However, please be mindful of our situation and ensure that you keep transportation costs affordable. Let us consider it as a social service and not as a revenue generation drive,” urged Governor Zulum during the unveiling ceremony.
Governor Zulum also commended the management of the state-owned transport company for their commitment to improving the welfare of both serving and retired staff. He noted that since assuming office, the General Manager had consistently ensured timely payment of staff entitlements, a commendable practice that benefits the entire workforce.
This announcement is a significant milestone in enhancing the quality of life for Borno State residents, particularly civil servants who rely on public transportation for their daily commutes. The state government’s investment in modern and comfortable buses demonstrates its unwavering dedication to improving the overall well-being of its citizens and providing palliative measures amid current economic challenges.
As the newly unveiled buses hit the roads of Borno State, they hold the promise of a more convenient and efficient commute for civil servants and the public alike. This development marks a positive and much-needed enhancement to the region’s transportation infrastructure.
