Former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s failure to provide credible leadership capable of addressing Nigeria’s political challenges.
Melaye, who served as the PDP’s 2023 governorship candidate in Kogi State, made his decision known through a letter dated July 4, 2025, addressed to the PDP chairman in Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, located in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The letter was made public on Thursday, July 31, 2025, via Melaye’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account.
“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement,” Melaye stated in the letter.
He expressed disappointment over the party’s performance and its inability to offer a viable political alternative to Nigerians, describing the PDP as lacking the “potency and capacity” to deliver the country from what he called the “prevailing political cankerworms” affecting the nation.
“Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in the activities of the party or lend my support to her agenda,” he added.
Melaye emphasized that his decision followed deep introspection and a careful assessment of the party’s current trajectory, leading to what he called a necessary disengagement.
“Please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect,” the letter concluded.
Melaye’s resignation adds to growing concerns about internal cohesion within the PDP, especially following its underperformance in the 2023 general elections.
