BREAKING: INEC declares Kebbi governorship election inconclusive

INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakub

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the governorship election held in Kebbi State inconclusive. The decision was announced by the collation and presiding officer for the election, Professor Yusuf Sa’idu, who cited massive cancellation and overvoting in 20 out of the 21 local government areas of the state.

According to Professor Yusuf Sa’idu, the total registered voters for the election stood at 2,032,041, out of which the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 388,258 votes while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) garnered 342,980 votes. This left a difference of 45,278 votes.

The total valid votes in the election were 792,234, rejected votes 18,204, and the total votes cast was 760,438. During the collation process, the presiding officer took records of where cancellations were made in 20 out of the 21 local government areas of the state, totaling 91,829.

In accordance with the electoral laws, INEC has declared the election inconclusive due to the high number of cancellations and overvoting. The PDP representative at the collation center, Alhaji Sani Dododo, refused to sign the results, insisting that INEC must announce the total figure of overvoting and cancellations made in the 20 affected local government areas.

The declaration of the Kebbi State governorship election as inconclusive means that a rerun election will be conducted in the affected areas. INEC has assured the people of Kebbi State that a new date will be fixed for the rerun election, and that all necessary arrangements will be made to ensure a free, fair, and credible exercise.

The commission has also urged political parties and their supporters to maintain peace and avoid any action that could undermine the integrity of the electoral process. INEC reiterated its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria, and called on all stakeholders to support its efforts in this regard.
