BREAKING: INEC Postpones Governorship Elections

To Commence the Election on 18th of March, 2023

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakub

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of the governorship and state house of assembly elections scheduled for March 11, 2023, by one week to March 18, 2023. According to credible sources, the postponement is due to the inability of the commission to commence the re-configuration of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines used for the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections, to enable their use for the state elections.

The BVAS re-configuration, which would take three or four days, would involve moving the machines to the INEC headquarters in Abuja, re-configuring them, deploying them to the various states, and finally to the polling units. INEC management is currently holding a meeting to decide on the new election date, with March 18 or March 25 being the options under consideration. However, it was reported that March 18 has been chosen for the elections.

This is the third consecutive general election that INEC will be postponing. On Wednesday, the Court of Appeal granted INEC’s request to reconfigure BVAS for the governorship and state assembly elections. This development has caused concern and confusion among Nigerians, who are eager to exercise their civic duty and choose their preferred leaders.

INEC’s decision to postpone the governorship and state house of assembly elections has attracted mixed reactions from various quarters, with some stakeholders calling for transparency in the electoral process. The postponement of the election has raised questions about the capacity of the electoral body to conduct free, fair, and credible elections, as well as the readiness of the BVAS machines for use in the forthcoming elections.

It is imperative that INEC puts all necessary measures in place to ensure a smooth and seamless electoral process, as the credibility of the electoral body is crucial to the stability and development of Nigeria’s democracy. INEC must also communicate effectively with Nigerians and provide regular updates on the progress of the electoral process to allay fears and anxieties.

The postponement of the governorship and state house of assembly elections by INEC has caused widespread concern and confusion among Nigerians. It is hoped that the electoral body will take all necessary measures to ensure a credible electoral process, and that the government will provide the needed support to enable INEC to conduct free, fair, and credible elections. Nigerians deserve nothing less than a transparent and credible electoral process that reflects their aspirations and strengthens their democracy.
