Manchester United has announced the appointment of Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim manager, following the departure of Erik ten Hag. Van Nistelrooy, who served as Ten Hag’s assistant, will take charge of the team until a permanent replacement is found.
The Dutch football legend’s appointment was confirmed in a statement that acknowledged Ten Hag’s achievements during his tenure. Ten Hag led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

Gary Neville, Van Nistelrooy’s former teammate, believes the interim manager can make a positive impact. “He can set the team up differently,” Neville told Sky Sports. “But he’s been on the bench with Erik ten Hag, so I’d be amazed if there was something drastic in the next few games.”
Neville emphasized that significant work is needed to address the team’s struggles. “Ultimately, there needs to be quite a lot of work done with those players because, at this moment in time, they are desperately struggling,” he added.
Manchester United will conduct a thorough search for a permanent head coach. The duration of Van Nistelrooy’s interim tenure and the timeline for appointing a permanent replacement have not been disclosed.
The appointment comes as Manchester United seeks to revive its season and address the team’s recent struggles.
