BREAKING: NDLEA Proposes Drug Testing for Students Seeking University Admission

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kwara State Command has proposed that drug testing be made a requirement for students seeking admission into Nigerian universities. This suggestion was put forward by NDLEA Kwara State Commander, Fatima Abiola-Popoola, during a recent press conference in Ilorin.

Abiola-Popoola expressed deep concern over the increasing rates of drug abuse in Nigeria, particularly among women. According to a 2018 survey she referenced, approximately 14.3 million Nigerians use drugs, meaning that one in seven individuals in the country is a drug user. This rising trend is troubling, given the pivotal role women play in managing families and communities.

The NDLEA commander highlighted the broader societal implications of this issue, noting that the growing involvement of women in drug abuse poses significant risks to family stability and societal health. She called for greater involvement from traditional institutions in combating drug trafficking and abuse. Abiola-Popoola urged traditional rulers to be more vigilant in their communities and to use their positions to gather and act on information related to drug use.

The proposed drug testing requirement aims to address drug abuse from the onset of higher education, potentially reducing the number of future drug users. By making drug testing a condition for university admission, the NDLEA hopes to contribute to a healthier student population and a more stable society.
