A major political realignment is unfolding in Nigeria as top opposition figures have united under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to present a formidable challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
The meeting, which took place at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, attracted key political players across party lines. Among the notable attendees were former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi. Their joint appearance at the ADC event signals an unprecedented level of cooperation among opposition forces ahead of the next electoral cycle.
In a strategic move, the coalition adopted the African Democratic Congress as its new platform to consolidate efforts and mobilize nationwide support. Former Senate President David Mark was named interim national chairman of the ADC, following his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Former Osun State governor and former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, was also announced as the interim national secretary.

Their presence, alongside representatives from the PDP, Labour Party (LP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP), reflected the broad base of support forming around the ADC-led coalition.
Observers believe this alliance could reshape the political landscape as Nigeria heads toward the 2027 elections. With power players from different backgrounds uniting under a single platform, the opposition is signaling its readiness to offer a serious alternative to the APC.
More developments are expected as the coalition fine-tunes its strategies in the coming months.
