BREAKING: Senate Confirms Hashimu Argungu as Chairman of the Police Service Commission

In a decisive move to strengthen the leadership of Nigeria’s Police Service Commission (PSC), the Senate has confirmed Mr. Hashimu Argungu as the new Chairman. This confirmation was part of a broader decision that also saw the appointment of Chief Onyemuche Nnamani and Mr. Frederick Lakanu as Secretary and Member of the PSC, respectively.

The confirmation followed the presentation and adoption of the Committee on Police Affairs’ report during a session of the Committee of the Whole on Thursday. The Chairman of the Committee, Sen. Abdulhamid Ahmed (APC-Jigawa), emphasized the impeccable professional records of the nominees, underscoring their proven integrity and capability.

According to Sen. Ahmed, there were no petitions or adverse security reports against the nominees, which further validated their suitability for the roles. He highlighted their qualifications, track record of excellence, professional services, and extensive experience as key factors that confirmed their competence.

The nominations received bipartisan support from various senators. Sen. Seriake Dickson (PDP-Bayelsa) affirmed the committee’s diligent work and vouched for the nominees based on his personal knowledge of their capabilities. He encouraged the Senate to proceed with the confirmations.

Sen. Ahmed Lawan (APC-Yobe) praised the committee for its meticulous screening process. He expressed confidence in the nominees’ qualifications and their potential to perform admirably in their new roles. Lawan also addressed past conflicts between the Office of the Inspector General of Police and the PSC concerning the recruitment of new police officers. This issue, which escalated to the Supreme Court, highlighted the need for a harmonious working relationship between the two entities.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio underscored the necessity for the Committee on Police Affairs to perform robust oversight functions to prevent conflicts like those experienced previously. He pointed out that in the last two years, the Nigerian Police Force missed the opportunity to recruit an additional 20,000 officers due to these internal disputes.

Akpabio stressed that the PSC and the Office of the Inspector-General of Police must prioritize national security and public interest over personal agendas. He urged both offices to work collaboratively to fulfill President Bola Tinubu’s vision of ensuring that Nigerians can sleep with their eyes closed, secure in the knowledge that the nation’s police force is effectively managed.

The confirmation of Mr. Hashimu Argungu and the other nominees is expected to usher in a new era of stability and efficiency within the Police Service Commission. Their leadership will be crucial in navigating the challenges facing Nigeria’s police force and in implementing reforms aimed at enhancing public safety and trust in law enforcement.

This significant development signals the Senate’s commitment to reinforcing the PSC’s leadership, ensuring that it is equipped with individuals of high integrity and competence to lead Nigeria’s police force into a new chapter of excellence and accountability.
