In a recent development in Nigeria’s political landscape, the Senate has failed to confirm the nomination of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, and a ministerial nominee from Kaduna State, for a ministerial position in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Alongside El-Rufai, Senator Abubakar Danladi, the former Deputy Governor of Taraba State, and a Ministerial nominee from the State, were also not confirmed. Additionally, one of the Ministerial nominees from Delta State, Stella Okotete, faced the same outcome.
The confirmation process, which spanned seven days, involved screening forty-nine ministerial nominees, sent to the Senate for scrutiny by President Bola Tinubu. Out of the forty-nine, forty-five nominees received the Senate’s confirmation, while the fate of three nominees, including El-Rufai, Danladi, and Okotete, remained in limbo due to pending security reports.
According to Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Senate withheld clearance for these nominees based on the need to address certain security concerns and obtain necessary clearance before their appointment to ministerial positions.
Meanwhile, the Senate did confirm several prominent figures for ministerial roles. Notable names on the list include the immediate past Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike; the Deputy Majority Senate Leader and former Governor of Ebonyi State, Senator Dave Umahi; former Minister of State, Labour, and Employment, Festus Keyamo, SAN; Lateef Fagbemi, SAN; Hon. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, and Dele Alake as Ministers Designate.
The confirmation process has revealed the Senate’s careful consideration of each nominee’s background and security clearance, ensuring that only qualified and suitable candidates assume key ministerial positions in the government.
