BREAKING: Wrestling Legend Rey Misterio Sr. Dies at 66

The wrestling world is mourning the loss of one of its greatest legends, Rey Misterio Sr., born Miguel Ángel López Días, who passed away at the age of 66. The news was shared by his son, El Hijo de Rey Misterio (Miguel Aarón López Hernández), in an emotional Facebook post on December 20, confirming the death of the iconic luchador.

“Friends and family, I regret to inform you that my Father, Miguel Ángel López Días, Rey Misterio Sr., passed away this morning,” the post read, accompanied by a promise to keep loved ones informed. While the cause of death remains undisclosed, tributes have poured in from fans and fellow wrestlers alike.

One of the most poignant tributes came from Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, the prominent Mexican wrestling organization, which offered their condolences. “We mourn the sensitive passing of Miguel Ángel López Días, known as Rey Misterio Sr. We send our deepest condolences to your loved ones and lift our prayers to heaven for your eternal rest,” the company said in a statement.

Rey Misterio Sr.’s legacy stretches across generations of wrestling talent. As the uncle of WWE superstar Rey Misterio and great-uncle to WWE’s Dominik Mysterio, his impact on the wrestling world was felt on a global scale. Dominik Misterio shared his tribute via Instagram, posting touching photos of his late great-uncle, with a simple black heart emoji.

The family is reeling from another loss as Rey Misterio Sr.’s brother and Rey Misterio’s father, Roberto Gutierrez, passed away only a month earlier at the age of 76.

Rey Misterio Sr. began his wrestling career in 1976 after first pursuing boxing. Throughout his career, he was known for his hard-hitting style and incredible agility, which made him a fan favorite in Mexico and internationally. He competed in major promotions like Tijuana Wrestling, the World Wrestling Association (WWA), Pro Wrestling Revolution, and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. Misterio Sr.’s career reached a significant milestone in 1990, when he represented Mexico in the prestigious “Pat O’Connor Memorial International Cup” at World Championship Wrestling’s Starrcade, alongside fellow wrestling icon Konnan.

Over the years, Misterio Sr. amassed numerous titles, including the Revolution Tag Team Championship (won alongside his son), the IWC World Middleweight Championship, and the WWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Championship. His work inside the ring helped establish him as one of the most respected figures in lucha libre.

In addition to his own in-ring success, Rey Misterio Sr. was instrumental in mentoring and training some of the biggest stars in wrestling, including Konnan, Psicosis, Damian 666, and Halloween. He also played a significant role in shaping the career of his nephew, Rey Misterio, who would go on to become one of WWE’s most iconic and celebrated performers.

As the wrestling community comes together to honor the memory of Rey Misterio Sr., his contributions to the sport and his legacy of mentorship and passion for lucha libre will not be forgotten.
