NAFDAC Warns Nigerians Against Recalled Nivea Deodorant Over Harmful Chemical

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public warning regarding the use of a Nivea Black & White Invisible Roll-On Deodorant, alerting Nigerians to avoid the product due to health risks. According to NAFDAC, the deodorant, manufactured by German multinational company Beiersdorf AG, has been flagged and recalled in Europe for containing a prohibited chemical known as 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl propionaldehyde (BMHCA).

This particular Nivea roll-on, marketed as part of the Black & White Invisible series, is designed to prevent visible deodorant stains on clothing, making it popular among users seeking long-lasting freshness without staining. However, concerns raised by the European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX) indicate that BMHCA, which is banned in cosmetic products, can cause skin irritation and potentially affect reproductive health, posing risks for both users and unborn children.

NAFDAC advises all members within the product’s distribution chain to exercise caution to prevent further importation, distribution, or sale of the affected batch. Retailers, importers, and consumers are instructed to stop any sales or use of the product immediately. NAFDAC requests that those in possession of the affected roll-on return it to the nearest NAFDAC office for further investigation and to assist in preventing potential health hazards.

The agency further encourages healthcare professionals and consumers to report any adverse reactions experienced from using regulated products, including this Nivea roll-on. Reports can be submitted to NAFDAC through their nearest offices or via their online pharmacovigilance platforms at pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng.

NAFDAC reiterates the importance of public awareness and vigilance in maintaining health and safety standards, affirming its commitment to safeguarding public health through swift responses to safety issues in consumer products.
