The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Isa-Kwarra, is scheduled to meet with President Bola Tinubu this week, as preparations for the 2023 Population and Housing Census gain momentum. The meeting, aimed at providing updates on the census activities, comes after the postponement of the census, which was initially slated for May 3-7 but was deferred indefinitely.

The decision to postpone the census was approved by former President Muhammadu Buhari, who entrusted the task of selecting a new date to the incoming administration led by President Tinubu. In an official statement released on April 29, the Federal Executive Council emphasized the significance of conducting a comprehensive census after a 17-year hiatus. The updated data is crucial for informed policymaking, development planning, and improving the standard of living for the Nigerian populace.
Isiaka Yahaya, the spokesperson for the NPC, confirmed the upcoming meeting between the NPC Chairman and President Tinubu. Although the specific date was not disclosed, Yahaya stated that preparations were underway to present a comprehensive overview of the census progress to President Tinubu.
When asked about the ongoing activities in preparation for the census, Yahaya mentioned that the NPC was actively engaged in various tasks, including sensitization programs and online training sessions. These activities are vital for creating awareness among the Nigerian population and equipping census workers with the necessary skills and knowledge to conduct an accurate and efficient census.

The significance of the census cannot be overstated. By capturing up-to-date demographic data, the NPC aims to provide policymakers, government agencies, and other stakeholders with essential information to address various socio-economic challenges and formulate effective strategies for national development. The census will shed light on population distribution, age structure, education levels, employment patterns, housing conditions, and other critical indicators necessary for evidence-based decision-making.

As the NPC Chairman gears up to meet with President Tinubu, the discussion is expected to focus on the progress made in census preparations thus far. The meeting will likely address the challenges faced by the NPC and explore ways to overcome them to ensure a successful census exercise. President Tinubu’s guidance and support are crucial in steering the nation towards an accurate and all-encompassing population and housing census.
Census 2023 is poised to kickstart a new era of data-driven governance and policymaking in Nigeria. The collaboration between the NPC and the federal government, as exemplified by the meeting between the NPC Chairman and President Tinubu, signifies a commitment to harnessing accurate demographic information for the betterment of the Nigerian people.
