Dangote Refinery Nears Operation as it Receives Second Million-Barrel Crude Shipment, Boosting Nigeria's Energy Independence

In a significant development for Nigeria’s energy landscape, the $19 billion Dangote Oil Refining Company is gearing up for production with the arrival of an additional one million barrels of crude oil. The refinery, which recently received its first one million barrels of Agbami crude grade from Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Limited, has now accumulated a total of two million barrels, setting the stage for operational commencement.

The latest shipment was delivered to the facility’s Single-Point Mooring (SPM) and promptly discharged into the refinery’s crude oil tanks. Industry experts anticipate that with this substantial crude supply, the Dangote Refinery is poised to start operations, marking a major milestone that could have a positive impact on Nigeria and the broader West African region.

With a production capacity of 350,000 barrels per day, the Dangote Refinery holds particular significance for Nigeria, a country that has long relied on fuel imports despite having over 37 billion barrels of proven reserves. NJ Ayuk, the Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber, expressed excitement about the refinery securing its crude cargoes, emphasizing its potential to end the country’s dependence on fuel imports.

Ayuk stated in a telephone interview with Vanguard, “This cargo will see diesel, aviation fuel, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas produced, followed shortly thereafter by the production of Premium Motor Spirit. These products will enable the country to become self-sufficient while exporting to regional neighbors.” He highlighted the refinery’s role in strengthening fiscal dynamics, ending fuel subsidies, and setting a benchmark for other resource-rich countries in Africa.

Dr. Diran Fawibe, Chairman of International Energy Services, also welcomed the development, emphasizing the multiplier effects, including job opportunities. He noted the historical significance of countries ensuring a share of local production for refining, citing the role it plays in energy security.

The Dangote Refinery is designed exclusively for Nigerian crude, with expectations to meet 100% of the country’s demand for refined products, while also exporting surplus. This approach underscores the facility’s instrumental role in fostering economic growth within Nigeria and reducing reliance on external resources. As the refinery inches closer to operational status, stakeholders eagerly anticipate the first supply of Nigerian fuel products.
