Davido Deletes Controversial Music Video Following Backlash from Muslim Community

In response to criticism and backlash from the Muslim faithful, Nigerian music sensation David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has taken down a controversial music video. The video, titled “Jaye Lo,” was released on Friday, July 21, 2023, and featured his signee Olamilekan Taiwo, also known as Logos Olori.

The 45-second clip depicted men dancing in front of a mosque, a scene that was deemed offensive by some members of the Muslim community in the country. The ensuing outcry led Davido to remove the video from his social media pages, leaving only a link to the song.

Meanwhile, @Jibreelkhalil stated that Davido’s deletion of the video was not enough, demanding an unreserved apology to Muslims on video and in two national dailies, along with a commitment to avoid such mistakes in the future.

Bashir Ahmed, @BashirAhmaad, commended Davido for taking down the offensive video and urged that the scene be entirely removed from the footage before its release to the market. He also appealed for everyone to foster an atmosphere of inclusion, empathy, and respect, embracing the beauty of living in unity despite differences.

The incident serves as a reminder that artists and public figures need to be mindful of cultural and religious sensitivities while creating and promoting their content. As Nigeria is known for its diverse population with various beliefs and values, it is crucial to engage in meaningful conversations, learn from one another, and find common ground to promote harmony and understanding.

Moving forward, it is hoped that lessons have been learned from this incident and that artists will exercise greater caution in their creative expressions, ensuring that their work does not inadvertently offend or hurt any community.
