Several DisCos confirmed that the grid collapse rendered their feeders inactive, exacerbating the widespread power outage. The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) both issued statements attributing the blackout to a system failure in the national grid. They appealed for understanding from their customers and assured them that efforts were underway to restore normal power supply.
This latest collapse adds to a series of similar incidents in recent times. In 2023, Nigeria faced multiple power outages, with the national grid collapsing twice in September and once in December of that year. Bismarck Rewane, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Financial Derivatives Company Limited, highlighted that the national grid had collapsed 12 times in 2023, emphasizing the challenges faced by the country’s power infrastructure.
