In the midst of growing speculation surrounding the ministerial appointment of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, a foundational member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Osita Okechukwu has made a heartfelt appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider any decision to remove El-Rufai from his cabinet.
The confirmation of the former Kaduna governor’s appointment has recently been marred by controversy, reportedly due to concerns raised in a security report. However, Okechukwu, who also serves as the Director General of Voice of Nigeria, has urged for a thorough consideration of El-Rufai’s potential contributions to the nation as Minister of Power.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Okechukwu emphasized the crucial role El-Rufai could play in revitalizing the nation’s power sector. He underlined that “Nigeria cannot achieve significant development without addressing the deficiencies in our electricity supply chain. El-Rufai’s proven track record in various capacities, including the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Kaduna State, showcases his exceptional competence and capacity to bring about transformation.”

Okechukwu further highlighted the importance of having a strong, skilled figure leading efforts to address the ongoing challenges in the energy industry. “Epileptic power supply has led to the exclusion of numerous individuals from our public electricity network, impacting both businesses and households. El-Rufai’s unique perspective and skills can be instrumental in rectifying this issue,” he stated.
Responding to concerns about El-Rufai’s past actions and controversies, Okechukwu acknowledged that injustice should be condemned in all forms. However, he suggested that El-Rufai’s potential to positively impact the nation’s power supply might serve as a form of atonement for any past transgressions. “While it’s important to address any wrongdoings, the urgent need to save lives through improved power supply cannot be understated,” Okechukwu asserted.

Okechukwu drew parallels to a prior recommendation he had made in 2015, proposing El-Rufai for the role of Chief of Staff, which had ultimately led to his appointment as Kaduna State governor. He cautioned against missing the opportunity to leverage El-Rufai’s expertise once again, particularly as the APC approaches the 2027 general elections.
Okechukwu made a plea to President Tinubu to prioritize the nation’s progress and the betterment of the power sector by retaining El-Rufai in the ministerial position. As the nation navigates various challenges, Okechukwu stressed that the right leadership could be the key to unlocking positive change.
