The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has seized the passport of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, the former governor of Delta State and ex-vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This action is part of the bail conditions tied to the EFCC’s investigation into allegations that Okowa misappropriated over N1.3 trillion during his tenure as governor.
Okowa, who was reportedly detained last week at the EFCC’s Port Harcourt office, is accused of diverting funds allocated to Delta State under the 13% derivation fund meant for oil-producing states. These funds, designed to support critical infrastructure and development in oil-producing regions, were allegedly mismanaged between 2015 and 2023.
Confirming the restriction, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale explained that the seizure of Okowa’s passport was standard procedure. “It is normal practice in law enforcement. When someone is granted bail, we retain their passport and impose other conditions to ensure they cooperate with investigations,” he said.

The case has also sparked political controversy, with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) alleging that Okowa and his allies are plotting to create unrest by using vehicles branded with the APC logo to stage incidents. These allegations, however, remain unverified, and Okowa’s team has not commented on the claims.
The investigation into Okowa highlights the ongoing concerns about corruption in Nigeria, particularly regarding the management of funds intended for development. Civil society groups and citizens have called for transparency in the case, urging the EFCC to ensure justice is served.
As the investigation continues, the situation could have significant implications for Okowa’s political career and the broader opposition movement. The EFCC has assured Nigerians that the probe will be thorough and impartial, emphasizing its commitment to tackling corruption in the country.
