The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has made a shocking revelation, exposing a staggering amount of corruption involving 58 former governors who allegedly misappropriated, embezzled, or laundered a whopping N2.187 trillion over a 25-year period. This amount is equivalent to the combined budgets of Lagos State and the South-East states for 2024, totaling N2.25 trillion and N2.29 trillion respectively.
According to the EFCC, these 58 ex-governors, who served in various regions of the country since the restoration of civilian government in 1999, have been investigated, probed, and prosecuted for their alleged involvement in corrupt activities. The list includes notable names such as James Ibori, Lucky Igbinedion, and Peter Odili, among others.
The EFCC’s allegations highlight the massive scale of corruption in Nigeria’s political circles, with the total amount looted exceeding the budgets of several states.
