Electric taxis excite Maiduguri residents, call for female drivers

The introduction of electric taxis in Maiduguri has sparked enthusiasm among residents, with many lauding the initiative for its positive impact on the city’s transportation landscape. Commuters have not only found the electric vehicles to be an exciting addition but have also voiced their support for the employment of female drivers in this eco-friendly mode of transportation.

The Borno Government recently acquired and deployed 50 electric cars and 57 mass transit buses to alleviate transportation costs. In a ceremony on December 11, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated these vehicles, marking a significant step toward sustainable and cost-effective urban mobility.

The electric taxis, which charge N100 per passenger, have quickly gained popularity among commuters, especially when compared to the N50 charged by government-subsidized buses. Residents have praised the convenience and affordability of the electric vehicles, with some describing the experience as a positive addition to the city’s transport system.

Amina Audu, a resident, expressed her satisfaction with the electric taxis and called for an expansion of the fleet, suggesting the inclusion of female drivers. She stated, “Many of us (women) are excited with the taxis to the extent of taking selfies while taking a ride, we wish for more of them and the need to have female drivers for some of the beautiful cars.”

Ibrahim Khalifa, a passenger, highlighted the convenience and cost-effectiveness of using electric vehicles. He emphasized that the taxis, accommodating four passengers, offer a faster alternative for those willing to pay a premium for quicker travel.

However, as the popularity of electric taxis grows, concerns have been raised about the need for adequate maintenance and charging infrastructure. Ibrahim Grema, a driver of one of the electric cars, explained that it takes approximately one and a half hours to fully charge the vehicle’s battery, allowing for 12 hours of operation. He commended the positive response from commuters and emphasized the importance of proper maintenance for sustained performance.

To meet the increasing demand, drivers Umar Mohammad and Mohammed Kachalla have called on the Borno Express Corporation, the agency managing the electric vehicles, to install more charging points. Presently, only two charging points are available, and expanding the infrastructure will be crucial to ensuring the seamless operation of the growing fleet.

As Maiduguri embraces the era of electric transportation, the call for female drivers adds a new dimension to the evolving narrative, emphasizing inclusivity and diversity in the city’s workforce.
