Federal Government Aims to Assist 15 Million Impoverished Households Through Conditional Cash Transfer Program

In a significant move towards poverty alleviation, the Nigerian federal government has revealed its ambitious plan to extend support to 15 million underprivileged households across the nation. The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, unveiled this comprehensive strategy during a press briefing held in Abuja on Thursday, August 31.

The focal point of this initiative is the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) program, which is managed by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. This program aims to uplift the indigent population by providing them with direct financial aid. Minister Edu conveyed her optimism about the program’s potential to drive positive change. She also indicated that an expanded social register will be utilized to identify and select eligible households for the assistance program.

The ministry’s action plan is contingent on receiving the green light from President Bola Tinubu at the upcoming Federal Executive Council meeting. If approved, the ministry is poised to promptly initiate the process of reaching out to the targeted 15 million households. With an average of approximately 5.7 individuals per household, the scope of the initiative is both comprehensive and impactful.

“Eradicating poverty stands as one of the cornerstones of the president’s comprehensive agenda. Our recent discussions with the World Bank were productive, and with presidential approval, we are set to engage with 15 million poor and vulnerable households,” stated Minister Edu. She emphasized the seriousness of their commitment to effect change swiftly, indicating that the CCT program would be employed to execute the endeavor, leveraging the expanded social register as a foundational resource.

“This administration is unwavering in its determination to combat poverty and provide a safety net for those in need. Our approach can be likened to offering ladders to those within the poverty pit to help them climb out, while ensuring that those on the brink of falling into the pit are provided with a safety net to prevent their descent,” Minister Edu elaborated.

The overarching objective of this ministry is to outline a comprehensive agenda that will guide their efforts to achieve poverty eradication by the year 2030. President Tinubu’s steadfast commitment to this vision underscores the administration’s dedication to sustainable change.

As the government prepares to present this proposal to the Federal Executive Council for approval, the nation’s anticipation is palpable. If successful, this initiative has the potential to uplift millions of lives, reinforcing the administration’s dedication to creating a future in which poverty is relegated to the annals of history.
