Federal Government Launches Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at Two Nigerian Research Institutes

In a groundbreaking move to advance health research in Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has announced plans to initiate a postdoctoral fellowship program at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) and the Nigerian Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD). The announcement was made by Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister for Health and Social Welfare, during the inauguration of the National Health Research Committee in Lagos.

The program aims to engage 100 postdoctoral fellows at each of the two prominent research institutes, emphasizing the strategic importance of fostering research talent in the country. Dr. Alausa highlighted the long-term vision of the initiative, stating, “We have put plans in place and also discussed with the two Director-Generals on our plans to start a postdoctoral fellowship program.” The minister further explained that the goal is to have nearly 1000 postdoctoral fellows in the next four years, contributing significantly to the sustainability of the National Health Research Committee (NHRC).

The NHRC, chaired by Prof. Funmilayo Olopade, a distinguished Hematology Oncologist at the University of Chicago, plays a crucial role in advancing health research initiatives in Nigeria. The newly inaugurated committee aligns with the government’s vision for health research, focusing on innovation, technology, disease surveillance, early warning systems, equity and access, translational research, implementation science, community-centric research, capacity building, and collaboration.
