FG Invites Gumi for Questioning on Bandits' Activities

Kaduna-based Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi has been summoned by security agencies for questioning regarding remarks he made concerning the activities of bandits, as disclosed by the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris. The minister emphasized that no one is exempt from the law, and if found culpable, Gumi will face consequences.

Addressing reporters after a Federal Executive Council meeting, Minister Idris underscored the responsibility of security agencies to investigate statements that could impact national security. He affirmed that constructive suggestions would be considered, but reckless remarks would be addressed accordingly.

Furthermore, Minister Idris reiterated the government’s stance on ransom payments, stating that no ransom was given for the release of 137 abducted schoolchildren in Kaduna State. He emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s determination to end the cycle of ransom payments, affirming that such payments only embolden criminals.

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State clarified that Gumi was not involved in negotiating the release of the abducted pupils, despite offering to engage with the bandits. He dismissed speculations of ransom payments, reiterating the government’s position against such practices.

Gumi’s recent clash with security agencies stemmed from his objection to the designation of certain individuals, including his associate Tukur Mamu, as terror sponsors by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU). Gumi contended that security agencies lacked the authority to label Nigerians as terror financiers.
