Benin City, Nigeria – July 2, 2025 — The Federal Government has commenced a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion training programme targeted at female mechanics in Edo State as part of efforts to enhance women’s participation in Nigeria’s evolving automotive and clean energy sectors.
The training, which runs from June 30 to July 4, 2025, is being conducted at the Lady Mechanic Vocational Hub in Benin City. It is a joint initiative between the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), the Edo State Government, and the Lady Mechanic Initiative (LMI).
According to the Director-General of NADDC, the training is designed to equip women in the automotive field with practical, hands-on experience in CNG conversion technology. He stated that the programme not only strengthens technical capacity in alternative fuel systems but also creates opportunities for innovation, sustainable employment, and entrepreneurship.
“This training focuses on empowering female mechanics with the knowledge and skills necessary to adapt to Nigeria’s shift towards cleaner, more efficient energy sources in the transport sector,” the NADDC DG said.
Participants are receiving intensive instruction on converting petrol-powered vehicles to run on CNG, including engine diagnostics, safety procedures, and practical installation techniques. At the end of the program, the trainees will be awarded certifications qualifying them to operate as CNG conversion specialists.
Founder of the Lady Mechanic Initiative, Mrs. Sandra Aguebor, applauded the collaboration, stressing the importance of involving more women in the nation’s energy transition plans. She described the training as a timely intervention that will bridge skill gaps in green automotive technologies.
Officials from the Edo State Government also reaffirmed the state’s commitment to promoting skill development, job creation, and gender inclusivity through strategic public-private partnerships.
This programme supports the Federal Government’s broader Energy Transition Plan, which aims to reduce dependency on fossil fuels by encouraging the use of cleaner alternatives such as Compressed Natural Gas.
