The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a major initiative to enhance the quality of education in the country’s Federal Unity Colleges. Dr. Yusuf Sununu, Minister of State for Education, revealed that 3,500 new teaching staff would be recruited across these institutions nationwide. This announcement was made during the National Stakeholders’ Forum on Senior Secondary Education in Nigeria, held over two days.
The event, themed “Revitalising Senior Secondary Education in Nigeria for Global Competitiveness,” brought together key stakeholders in the education sector to address challenges facing senior secondary education in the country.
Dr. Sununu emphasized the government’s commitment to improving education standards. He stated, “The Ministry is working closely with the Office of the Head of Service, the Federal Civil Service Commission, and other relevant agencies to recruit 3,500 teaching staff for our Federal Unity Colleges nationwide. This recruitment drive is aimed at significantly improving the quality of education.”

In addition to the recruitment plan, the Ministry of Education has also focused on upskilling existing staff. Over 1,000 educators have been trained in technology application in education through the ministry’s research resource centre. Furthermore, more than 53 vocational skills acquisition centres have been established to address the skills needs of young Nigerians, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda for renewed hope.
Dr. Sununu also announced that the government had approved the construction of 50 additional model schools across Nigeria, furthering efforts to enhance teaching and learning.
The forum served as a platform for critical discussions on revitalising senior secondary education to ensure it meets global standards, with the recruitment of 3,500 teaching staff being a significant step in that direction.
