Flood Destroys Bridges, Homes and Farmlands in Kebbi State

A devastating flood has wreaked havoc in Dandi and Suru local government areas of Kebbi State, destroying bridges, submerging homes, and washing away farmlands.

The flood, which struck on Thursday, led to the collapse of two bridges — one in Fana township and another linking the Dakingari-Kyangakwai road. Vast farmlands and several residential buildings were also affected across the communities.

Government’s Swift Response

Kebbi State Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Tafida, visited the affected areas, extending condolences to victims in Fana, Aljannare, and Kampani villages. He also presented relief materials and financial aid worth ₦70 million, alongside food supplies, to alleviate the suffering of displaced families.

The state government distributed ₦50 million and 600 bags of rice to victims in Fana, Maigwaza, and Tungar Beddi (Dandi LGA), ₦10 million and 250 bags of rice to Aljannare (Suru LGA), and another ₦10 million and 250 bags of rice to Kampani village (Argungu LGA).

During his visit, Senator Tafida assured residents that the government would reconstruct the collapsed bridges and continue to support victims. He prayed for Allah’s protection against future disasters and advised residents of flood-prone areas to relocate to safer grounds.

Casualties and Damage

According to the Chairman of Dandi LGA, Mansur Isah, one person lost their life, while hundreds of farms and many houses were destroyed. He and the member representing Dandi constituency, Sulaiman Abubakar, commended the state government’s rapid intervention.

Similarly, the Chairman of Suru LGA, Muhammad Suru, praised Governor Nasir Idris for the timely support, while the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama’ila Mera, commended the government’s assistance and pledged continued cooperation with the administration.

The Kebbi State Government has assured that reconstruction work on the collapsed bridges will commence soon to restore connectivity in the affected areas. Relief support will also continue to reach displaced persons through local councils and IDP camps.
