President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated former Kebbi State Governor, Alhaji Usman Saidu Dakingari, for an ambassadorial appointment as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic representation across the world. The nomination was formally transmitted to the Nigerian Senate for screening and confirmation.
The development was announced during a plenary session of the Senate, where the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, read the President’s letter. After the announcement, the nomination was referred to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, which is responsible for screening ambassadorial nominees and presenting its findings to the Red Chamber.
Dakingari served as Governor of Kebbi State from 2007 to 2015 and is widely known for his long involvement in public service and governance. His experience in administration and political leadership is expected to play a role in advancing Nigeria’s diplomatic and bilateral engagements if his nomination is confirmed.
It would be recalled that Dakingari’s name had appeared on an earlier list of ambassadorial nominees submitted by President Tinubu. However, the list was later withdrawn for review, a move that generated public discussion and political reactions. The fresh submission of his name signals renewed confidence by the Presidency in his capacity to serve as a diplomatic representative of Nigeria.
The ambassadorial nominations form part of President Tinubu’s broader strategy to reposition Nigeria’s foreign service, fill vacant diplomatic posts, and improve the country’s engagement with international partners. Several embassies and high commissions have operated without substantive ambassadors in recent times, making the confirmation of nominees a key priority.
If confirmed by the Senate, Dakingari will be tasked with representing Nigeria’s interests abroad, strengthening diplomatic ties, promoting economic cooperation, and supporting the country’s foreign policy objectives under the Tinubu administration.
The Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs is expected to conclude its screening and submit a report, after which the full Senate will decide whether to approve the nomination.
