Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has recently lauded his tenure in office, asserting that his administration effectively rescued Nigeria from the clutches of corruption that threatened to undermine its economy. In a statement released by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, Former President Buhari responded to allegations made by former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adokie, regarding various issues, including Process & Industrial Developments (P&ID), the Paris Club, and the Ajaokuta steel company.
According to the statement, Former President Buhari defended his administration’s record in the fight against corruption, labeling it as “unprecedented.” He contended that the cases cited by Adoke as instances of corruption within his administration had their roots in governments preceding his own. Buhari pointed out that Adoke himself had served in the government responsible for laying the foundation for these issues and their subsequent legal judgments.

Regarding the P&ID case, Former President Buhari maintained that he inherited the contract and its associated liability from the previous administration. Despite this, he emphasized his success in halting the execution of the judgment, preventing Nigeria from incurring over $10 billion in liabilities.
The statement also addressed the Paris Club issue, asserting its similarity in origin and circumstances to the P&ID case. Buhari argued that both cases were rooted in administrations predating his presidency. He defended his administration as one that had come to the rescue and had saved Nigeria from the impending collapse of its economy due to corrupt practices.
Buhari’s statement highlighted the legislative efforts introduced during his tenure, major recoveries made domestically, repatriation of stolen funds from abroad, and their allocation to infrastructure development. It also pointed out high-profile corruption convictions achieved during his presidency, with percentages surpassing previous records.
The former president’s anti-corruption efforts garnered international recognition, including his appointment as the African Continental Anti-Corruption Champion by the African Union. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and other organizations also commended his administration’s work in combating corruption.

The statement further refuted allegations made by Adokie concerning the aviation sector, highlighting capital infrastructure development, safety improvements, and policy changes that transformed the sector into an attractive hub for investment. However, it cautioned against making allegations of corruption without concrete evidence, emphasizing that such claims could be challenged by individuals from various walks of life.
