Former Senator Dino Melaye Emerges as PDP Governorship Candidate in Kogi State

In a landslide victory, former Senator of Kogi West Senatorial district, Dino Melaye, has emerged as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the November 14, 2023 Governorship election in Kogi State. Melaye defeated eight other aspirants in the PDP Governorship primary by polling 313 votes out of the 738 delegates.

His closest rival, Kingsley Idoko, polled 124 votes. The victory of Melaye in the primary election is expected to boost the PDP’s chances of winning the Kogi State Governorship election in November 2023.

Dino Melaye, who was a member of the House of Representatives and later a Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial district, has been a vocal politician and critic of the current administration in Kogi State. His emergence as the PDP Governorship candidate is seen as a significant development in the state’s political landscape, as he is expected to give a tough fight to the incumbent Governor, Yahaya Bello.

With the PDP’s massive support base in the state, Melaye’s candidacy is expected to give the party a fighting chance in the Governorship election. The PDP, which is the main opposition party in the state, has been making significant gains in recent times, winning a majority of the legislative seats in the state’s House of Assembly in the 2019 General elections. With Melaye’s candidacy, the party is expected to consolidate its gains and pose a significant challenge to the APC in the forthcoming Governorship election.

The emergence of Dino Melaye as the PDP Governorship candidate in Kogi State has set the stage for a keenly contested Governorship election in November 2023. With the PDP’s massive support base and Melaye’s popularity in the state, the party is expected to give the APC a tough fight and possibly take over the reins of power in the state.
