German Company Beiersdorf Reacts to NAFDAC Ban on NIVEA Brand Deodorant

Beiersdorf, the German manufacturer behind the NIVEA brand, has responded to a recent ban by Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) concerning its NIVEA Black & White Invisible Roll-on deodorant. The company clarified that this specific product has been discontinued since February 2022 and is no longer available for sale or distribution in Nigeria.

In a statement released on Saturday, Beiersdorf addressed NAFDAC’s concerns about the ingredient 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl propionaldehyde (BMHCA), also known as LilialTM, used in the deodorant. Following a European recall due to potential health risks such as skin irritation and reproductive harm, NAFDAC issued a warning against the product.

Beiersdorf explained that production of the NIVEA Black & White Invisible Roll-on deodorant had ended before the European ban on BMHCA took effect in March 2022. The affected batch, Batch No. 93529610, expired in January 2022, was compliant with regulations at the time, and was neither sold nor recalled in Nigeria.

The company reassured consumers that its entire NIVEA portfolio, including the Black & White line, has been free from LilialTM since 2020, in line with stringent safety standards. Beiersdorf expressed its ongoing commitment to working with NAFDAC to ensure consumer protection in Nigeria and uphold global safety standards across all products.
