In a stirring call for fairness and equity, Reverend Father Ejike Mbaka has advocated for an equal minimum wage across all sectors of Nigerian society. Addressing the ongoing debate surrounding the proposed national minimum wage, Mbaka emphasized the need for lawmakers, including governors, senators, and members of the House of Representatives, to receive the same monthly wage of N62,000 as other civil servants.
Mbaka’s plea comes at a crucial juncture as the Federal Government, following deliberations with the tripartite committee, has proposed a minimum wage of N62,000 for workers, a figure significantly lower than previous demands. Despite organized labor initially requesting N494,000 and later revising their demand to N250,000, Mbaka highlights the importance of extending this wage increase to all public servants, regardless of their position.

He questioned the disparity between the extravagant allowances granted to elected officials and the modest salaries of essential workers such as teachers, nurses, and doctors.
Mbaka urged the government to approach the minimum wage issue with caution, warning of potential crisis if grievances are not addressed promptly. He stressed the importance of fairness and realism, noting the significant inflationary pressures faced by ordinary citizens.
