The five individuals selected to lead key committees are Ibori Suenu, Mohammed Bello el-Rufai, Adegboyega Adefarati, Olamiju Akala, and Olumide Osoba. Ibori Suenu, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Delta, is set to head the Niger Delta Development Commission (NNDC) committee. On the other side of the aisle, Mohammed Bello el-Rufai, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Kaduna, will chair the Banking regulation committee. Adegboyega Adefarati, also from the APC, will take charge of the Labour, Employment, and Productivity committee, representing Ondo State. Olamiju Akala from Oyo will be heading the Youth in Parliament committee, while Olumide Osoba from Ogun will lead the Justice committee.

The appointments have drawn attention to the presence of political legacies in Nigeria’s government system. Ibori Suenu, the son of former Delta State Governor James Ibori, Mohammed Bello el-Rufai, the son of immediate past Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai, and Olumide Osoba, son of former Ogun Governor Segun Osoba, are among those chosen. Furthermore, Adegboyega Adefarati, son of the late former Ondo Governor Adebayo Adefarati, and Olamiju Akala, son of the late former Oyo Governor Alao Akala, have also assumed prominent roles.
While these individuals may possess relevant qualifications and experiences, their appointments have raised concerns about political nepotism and potential conflicts of interest. Critics argue that such appointments perpetuate a system where political power remains concentrated within a select group of families, hindering opportunities for broader representation and fresh perspectives.
Moreover, questions have been raised about the impartiality of oversight functions when children of former governors are overseeing government agencies and programs that may have ties to their family legacies. To maintain transparency and public trust, it is crucial for these appointed chairpersons to demonstrate impartiality in their roles and carry out their duties with utmost integrity.

The House of Representatives must be mindful of the public perception surrounding these appointments. As elected representatives, their primary responsibility is to serve the interests of the citizens and the nation as a whole. Thus, it is essential for the committees to address specific issues of national importance objectively and independently.
As the nation moves forward, it is expected that the newly appointed chairpersons will prove themselves through their actions and decisions. Upholding the principles of democracy and adhering to ethical standards will be crucial in dispelling concerns and ensuring the effective functioning of these committees.
In light of the public interest surrounding these appointments, it is incumbent upon the House of Representatives to maintain transparency and openness in their actions. Addressing the concerns raised by citizens will be vital in upholding the integrity of the parliament and its commitment to democratic governance.
