JAMB and NIMC Tackle UTME 2024 Applicant Issues in NIN Meeting

JAMB and NIMC Tackle UTME 2024 Applicant Issues in NIN Meeting

In the wake of mounting frustrations faced by prospective applicants for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a scheduled meeting with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). The meeting aims to address the challenges encountered by applicants attempting to link their National Identification Number (NIN) with their mobile telephone lines and rectify discrepancies in their NIN details.

The UTME, an annual entrance examination for candidates seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions, has mandated the use of NIN in the application process to counter malpractices such as impersonation. However, since the commencement of form sales on January 15, applicants and their guardians have expressed dissatisfaction with the hurdles hindering the generation of electronic pins for registration.

One guardian, Abiodun Omole, lamented that despite following laid-down instructions, his nephew faced difficulties generating the required profile code for registration, receiving a consistent message of “No record found.” Musefiu Alabi raised concerns about information disparities between NIMC records and registration details, emphasizing the need for timely corrections.

Findings revealed additional challenges with NIN, requiring data updates or corrections. However, many applicants proceeded with JAMB registration due to financial constraints on additional services. One parent remarked on the disparity in costs, stating, “The money required to correct data with NIMC can be used to obtain two UTME forms.”

Acknowledging the issues, JAMB’s Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Fabian Benjamin, pledged swift intervention, expressing surprise at the volume of complaints. He assured that a meeting between JAMB and NIMC has been scheduled for resolution.

Applicants encountering incorrect details in their NIN records were advised by Mr. Benjamin to pause UTME registration until NIMC updates and corrects the information.

Efforts to obtain a response from NIMC on the matter were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
