JUST IN: Customs Hands Over 1,198 Cartons of Unregistered Drugs to NAFDAC in Sokoto

In a proactive move to safeguard public health, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Sokoto/Zamfara area command, has officially handed over 1,198 cartons of unregistered and expired drugs to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Sokoto. The pharmaceuticals, intercepted at various locations within the area command, failed to meet statutory importation requirements, leading to their seizure.

During the handover at the command’s premises, Controller Musa Omale emphasized the critical role of the Nigeria Customs Service as the protector of national borders. He reiterated the commitment to ensuring the well-being of citizens by consistently delivering seized and unregistered pharmaceuticals to NAFDAC for further investigation and destruction.

Comptroller Musa Omale highlighted the collaboration policy thrust of the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, underscoring the global threat posed by counterfeit and unregistered pharmaceutical drugs. He assured NAFDAC of unwavering support in the fight against counterfeit drugs, emphasizing the danger these products pose to the nation.

The seized drugs, traced back to India and lacking essential manufacturing or expiration dates, were identified as violating customs laws. The importer remains at large, prompting a heightened state of readiness within the command to curtail such illicit activities.

In addition to the pharmaceutical seizures, the command reported intercepting other items against existing customs laws, showcasing its dedication to duty and the prevention of the importation of prohibited and harmful products into Nigerian markets.

Upon receiving the confiscated products, Mr. Garba AAdamu, the state’s coordinator of NAFDAC, commended the Nigeria Customs Service for its collaboration and synergy in maintaining a positive working relationship. He acknowledged the significant quantity of drugs and assured swift destruction to prevent any potential harm.

This collaborative effort between the Nigeria Customs Service and NAFDAC highlights the commitment of Nigerian authorities to combat the importation and circulation of harmful and unregistered pharmaceuticals in the country.
