JUST IN: Federal Government Bans Nigerians Under 18 from Buying SIM Cards

In a significant move aimed at protecting minors, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has officially prohibited individuals under the age of 18 from obtaining Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards. This decision is rooted in safeguarding young Nigerians from potential liabilities associated with SIM card usage, particularly as it pertains to issues of national security and personal accountability.

An NCC official, speaking to Premium Times, emphasized that parents or guardians can still acquire SIM cards in their own names for their children. However, they would be responsible for any liabilities or obligations arising from the SIM’s usage. This policy not only ensures minors are shielded from the potential misuse of mobile technology but also aligns with the broader goal of strengthening national security.

The NCC has been actively updating its telecommunications policies in recent years to combat escalating security threats in Nigeria. Recognizing 18 as the legal age of consent in Nigeria, the commission considers SIM acquisition to be a contractual agreement that requires subscribers to possess the maturity to handle the responsibilities and obligations of such a commitment.

This new regulation, now in effect, stems from the NCC’s Registration of Telephone Subscribers Regulations proposed in 2021. By implementing this policy, the NCC hopes to enhance the accountability of mobile network subscribers while encouraging parents to monitor the digital activities of their children.

This policy underscores the importance of responsible mobile usage in Nigeria, particularly as digital access continues to expand across the nation.
