In a resolute crackdown on illicit activities, the Kebbi State Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has made a significant stride in its ongoing efforts to curb smuggling and protect public safety. The operation resulted in the seizure of 371 parcels of cannabis sativa, commonly referred to as Indian hemp, and a staggering 1,080 pieces of donkey skin. The combined estimated worth of the confiscated contraband was a staggering N164,815,629.
Led by the Area Controller, Dr. Ben Oramalugo, the customs officials displayed unwavering dedication and resolve as they dismantled various smuggling attempts. Acting on actionable intelligence, the NCS intensified its surveillance across Kebbi State, aiming to thwart the impending activities of smugglers. This heightened vigilance led to the successful interception of a wide range of illegal items.

Among the seized items, the most prominent were the 371 parcels of cannabis sativa, intercepted at the Kawara water side within the Suru Local Government Area. This interception highlights the customs’ unyielding commitment to tackling the distribution of narcotics within the region. The officials also confiscated 98 packs of diazepam, a prescription medication, and 10 sacks of snuff.
The operation’s impact extended beyond countering the narcotics trade, as the customs officials also uncovered a cache of contraband items. Notably, 37 bags of foreign parboiled rice were seized, contributing to the fight against the influx of unauthorized food products that can undermine local markets and agriculture.
In a commendable move towards the protection of wildlife and biodiversity, the customs officials successfully confiscated 1,080 pieces of donkey skin. These endangered animals are often targeted for their skin, which is highly sought after for its supposed medicinal properties. This seizure underscores the role of the customs in safeguarding both national and global ecosystems by curbing illegal wildlife trafficking.

However, amidst these triumphs, the operation was marred by tragedy. Two diligent customs officers lost their lives in the line of duty due to suspected bandit activity. This unfortunate incident serves as a poignant reminder of the risks these officers face daily while striving to uphold the law and ensure the safety and security of the region.
The Kebbi State Area Command’s successful operation stands as a testament to the commitment and diligence of the customs officials in their fight against smuggling and illegal activities. By seizing contraband items, including narcotics and endangered animal products, the NCS contributes to the preservation of public health, wildlife conservation, and the rule of law.
